Tell-Tale Squirter® DTIs

These DTI's are designed to squirt at a low bolt preload, typically required on transmission towers, anchor bolts, and cap screws in some applications. They are priced economically to suit applications where some bolt tension is desired, but the tension is about half to one third of the tension produced by Standard SQUIRTER® DTIs. But the primary reason for using Tell-Tale SQUIRTER® DTIs DTIs is to enable the person bolting and inspector to know that ALL of the bolts have been tightened.

For Example -- Transmission tower bolts are manufactured to ASTM A394 and are not required to be tensioned over a minimum preload like ASTM A325 or A490 bolts. The typical tightening specification for towers involves snugging and then a part turn. Since these bolts are typically very short, any part turn produces a very high tension, in fact occasionally too high, resulting in unwanted bolt stretch. Inspection is generally done with a torque wrench, which is expensive and dangerous.

The two main requirements of transmission tower bolts are:

(A) That ALL bolts get some tightening effort, and none are missed
(B) That ALL bolts don't get stretched to the point of necking down

"Tell-Tale" SQUIRTER® DTIs help the installer and inspector accomplish exactly these two things, and inspection is purely visual. Safety is improved because no torque wrench is involved, and ALL the bolts get tightened because ANYONE can see from a distance if they are loose or tight.
